Senior Patent Agent, Bombardier Aerospace
Emma Start is the Senior Patent Agent for Bombardier Inc.’s three Aerospace business units: Commercial Aircraft, Business Aircraft and Aerostructures and Engineering Services. Based in Montreal, Ms. Start is responsible for the identification and protection of intellectual property assets resulting from new product development, complex systems integration and advanced research activities. In addition to fostering a strong internal IP culture, Ms. Start provides strategic guidance on managing confidential information and building a patent portfolio that supports the company’s business objectives and long-term competitive position. Ms. Start also provides support for IP matters associated with risk-mitigation, business transactions, supplier contracting and R&D collaborations.
Before joining Bombardier, Ms. Start worked for over ten years in private practice for one of Canada’s leading top-tier IP boutique law firms. Her practice focused on counseling clients in intellectual property matters as well as preparing and prosecuting patents in the fields of transportation, consumer products, medical devices and telecommunications systems. During her time in private practice, Ms. Start worked with clients of all sizes, from start-ups to multinationals, to help them build and maintain patent portfolios customized to their individual business needs.
Ms. Start earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from McGill University and is registered to practice before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Ms. Start has been an Associate of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) since 2001.
