BDC Presents FORPIQ 2023: Driving Innovation Forward
News Release – March 23, 2023
Montreal, Canada – Startups, small and medium-sized businesses looking to navigate the complex world of intellectual property (IP) won’t want to miss FORPIQ 2023 on May 10th 2023. The event, under the theme “Driving Innovation Forward,” will cover a range of topics, including maximizing IP value for startups and SMBs, empowering Canada’s innovation ecosystem, and the future of IP in the digital world.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from leaders in the field of IP and explore the latest trends in IP programs, clean tech, technology transfer, indigenous innovation, artificial intelligence, and digital asset management. The conference aims to help participants, including business owners, entrepreneurs, investors, researchers and others with varying levels of IP awareness increase the value of their technology and IP.
The event is open to all and will be conducted in both French and English. It is an excellent forum to exchange best practices and network with a diverse group of professionals from various sectors, including entrepreneurs and innovators, law firms, incubators and accelerators, financial service providers, government representatives, researchers and scientists, members of the academic community, and organizations in economic development.
According to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO): “Canadians across both public and private sectors recognize the importance of IP to further economic prosperity. Though Canada performs relatively well on innovation, ranking 17th in WIPO’s Global Innovation Index 2020, our innovation input rank (9th) exceeds our innovation output rank (22nd) substantially. IP rights like patents, trademarks, and industrial designs are central to a country’s innovation output. Patents incentivize innovation by giving owners exclusive rights to control the usage of their processes and technologies. Trademarks allow business owners to protect their unique branding, helping them distinguish their products and services in the marketplace and profit from their good reputation. Industrial designs protect the unique aesthetic features of products, which can give them a competitive edge in the marketplace. Enhancing Canadians’ use of IP rights both domestically and abroad is critical for success in an economy increasingly driven by intangible assets.”
“FORPIQ 2023 is designed to provide practical tools that attendees can put into action right away,” said Me David Durand, President of FORPIQ. “We work closely with all members of the ecosystem to provide entrepreneurs and innovators, from startups to SMBs, valuable insights that will help them take their business to the next level.”

FORPIQ (the International Intellectual Property Forum – Quebec) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote IP awareness amongst innovative Canadian entities and their advisers with respect to IP assets, such as data (and confidential information), patents, trademarks, copyright, trade secrets, know-how, industrial designs, etc. so as to gain more value therefrom.
In order to attain this objective, FORPIQ organizes forums, in which business leaders, intellectual property experts, investors, as well as government representatives are brought together so as to discuss and exchange their experiences and best practices with respect to IP.
FORPIQ was set up jointly by the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), the Licensing Executives Society (LES), the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) and the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI).
